Abingdon Campus: Distance Education Offering
Through a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification
and Community Revitalization Commission, the Department of Nurse Anesthesia has been able to offer its generic curriculum to residents of Southwest Virginia.
The program is presented via distant technology at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in
Abingdon, Virginia
The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (SWVHEC) was established by the Virginia
General Assembly in 1991 to strengthen the economy of southwest Virginia through education and training of the workforce. It provides over 66
undergraduate or graduate degree programs through distance technologies, including face-to-face instruction, two-way video, satellite downlinks, and
web-based courses.
Didactic Curriculum
Students at the SVHEC will be taking classes simultaneously with the Richmond students via distance
technologies.
Our didactic curriculum is presented via two-way interactive video conferencing technology enhanced
with desk top file sharing. This means that students at the distant site will see, and talk to the home site in real time and visa versa. Also, with the
enhanced desk top sharing, all slide presentations can be viewed directly through the remote site's computer and projector for crisp, clear visualization.
Additionally, a Web-Casting feature is provided which allows us to archive presentations thus
enabling all students both remote and local to review all presentations at a later time from their home or library computers.
