Programs for Caregivers working in Virginia's Licensed
Assisted Living and Adult Day Care Facilities

Developed jointly by the Division of Licensing Programs and the Virginia Geriatric Education Center, these training programs are made possible through the use of Assisted Living and Adult Day Care facility licensing fees. Programs are provided exclusively for employees of Licensed Assisted Living facilities and Adult Day Care Centers in Virginia.

Individualized Service Plan: Meeting Resident/Participant Needs

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of the Individual Service Plan program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic concepts of effective adult instruction and learning.
  • List various barriers and enablers to adult learning.
  • Apply effective methods for presenting the Individualized Service Plan curriculum to adults.
  • Utilize effective strategies to motivate adult learners to prepare and implement the Individualized Service Plan.
 

Working with Families

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of the Individual Service Plan program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe 4 roles that ALFs and staff can assume in the lives of residents’ families.
  • Demonstrate constructive interaction techniques.
  • Discuss how to respond to family needs and preferences.
  • Examine how various family programming strategies could be incorporated into the participant’s workplace.
 

Emergency Preparedness & Safety

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of the Individual Service Plan program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the components to creating a safe environment.
  • Describe the role of staff to ensure safety and preparedness.
  • Identify the barriers to safety and creating a disaster preparedness plan.
  • Develop a strategy to effectively implement a disaster preparedness plan.

Continuing Education Credits

Each course meets the continuing education criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. The VGEC is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Virginia Nurses' Association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. The VGEC is approved as a provider of continuing education credit by the National Association Boards of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators (NAB)

Appropriate forms for requesting continuing credits are available at each training session. Details vary by topic. There is a $10 fee for each request.
