Alcohol Abuse

Did you know that alcoholism is a growing problem in the older adult population? 2.5 to 3.7 million adults age 60 and over are addicted to alcohol, with women representing 1.8 million of these adults. Experts project that by 2030, nearly 6 million older adults will suffer from alcoholism.
Systems in the body change during the aging process, which affect absorption and metabolism of all chemicals, whether they are prescribed medications, alcohol, or other substances. These metabolic changes also can alter the effects of these substances and the way that they may interact with one another.
