| Did you know that alcoholism is a growing
problem in the older adult population? 2.5 to 3.7 million adults age
60 and over are addicted to alcohol, with women representing 1.8 million
of these adults. Experts project that by 2030, nearly 6 million older
adults will suffer from alcoholism.
Systems in the body change during the aging process, which affect absorption
and metabolism of all chemicals, whether they are prescribed medications,
alcohol, or other substances. These metabolic changes also can alter
the effects of these substances and the way that they may interact with
one another.
