Assisted Living and Adult Day Care Facilities

Developed jointly by the Division of Licensing Programs and the VCU's Department of Gerontology, these training programs are made possible through the use of Assisted Living and Adult Day Care facility licensing fees. Programs are provided exclusively for employees of Licensed Assisted Living facilities and Adult Day Care Centers in Virginia.

Individualized Service Plan: Meeting Resident/Participant Needs
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of the Individual Service Plan program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the Virginia licensing standards related to individualized service plans.
- Discuss the purpose of the uniform assessment instrument.
- Discuss the importance of the individualized service plan.
- Discuss the importance of interdisciplinary assessment of residents.
- Interpret assessments to determine resident needs.
- Develop and use goal oriented individualized service plans.
Mental Health: Part II Psychosis and Substance Abuse
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of the Mental Health: Part II Psychosis and Substance Abuse program, participants will be able to:
- Review the different types of psychosis, including the manifestations of psychotic symptoms in younger adults and older adults.
- Review medical causes of psychosis to include Dementia, Mood related, Generalized medical conditions, Delirium, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective disorder.
- Discuss the possible strategies/interventions when working with psychotic adults.
- Discuss alcohol use patterns including risk factors, signs, and complications of misuse and abuse.
- Discuss Alcohol induced persistent dementia.
- Review prevalence of illicit drug use among older adults. Discuss medication misuse & abuse.
- Interpret assessments to determine resident needs.
- Develop and use goal-oriented individualized service plans.
Nutritional Needs of Older Adults in Long Term Care Facilities
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of the Activities for the Nutritional Needs of Older Adults in Long Term Care Facilities program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the basic nutrition and hydration needs of adults in long-term care.
- Understand the relationship between nutrition and physical and cognitive functioning in older adults.
- Understand the implications of food and drug interactions in the elderly and disabled adult.
- Understand the role of nutrition in chronic disease care of older adults.
- Understand techniques in addressing feeding problems with physically or cognitively impaired.
- Apply the strategies for preventing medication related problems to actual resident cases.
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of the Activities for the Emergency Preparedness program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the components to creating a safe environment.
- Describe the role of staff to ensure safety and preparedness.
- Identify the barriers to safety and creating a disaster preparedness plan.
- Develop a strategy to effectively implement a disaster preparedness plan.

Each site will have the appropriate forms available for continuing education credit the day of the training. Mail the completed form and processing fee to the VCU Department of Gerontology, P.O. Box 980228, Richmond, VA 23298-0228. The deadline for requesting CEUs is two weeks after the last training date.
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: This course meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded by letter and recorded by Virginia Commonwealth University. There is a $10.00 processing fee.
Attendees will no longer need to apply for NAB credits for trainings offered by VCU´s Department of Gerontology through the support of DSS as additional documentation of attendance is not required.These trainings meet 18VAC95-30-70 B of the Regulations Governing the Practice of Assisted Living Facility Administrators: "In order for continuing education to be approved by the board [LTCA], it [training] shall be related to the domains of practice for residential care/assisted living and approved or offered by NAB, an accredited educational institution or a governmental agency."
