Welcome to the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) located on the Medical College of Virginia Campus in the "City of Monuments," Richmond, Virginia. Ranked as the best graduate nurse anesthesia program in the nation by US News and World Report, the Department is one of nine in the School of Allied Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University.

First organized in 1969, the Department of Nurse Anesthesia has a long and proud heritage of educating high quality professional nurse anesthetists. In fact, the Department was first in the nation to offer a Masters Degree in Nurse Anesthesia over 23 years ago. Nine academic nurse anesthesia faculty (four holding doctoral degrees), work in concert with over 50 adjunct faculty, 2 staff members and 15 clinical affiliated training sites to offer a 71 credit hour 7 semester program of study. The generic nurse anesthesia program of study is offered on two campuses: one in Richmond, Virginia and the second in Abingdon, Virginia via distance learning. Through the School of Allied Health Professions, the Department also offers a unique distance learning Ph.D. program of study in Health Related Sciences for nurse anesthetists.

The Department of Nurse Anesthesia recently received approval from the State Council on Higher Education for Virginia and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) for an innovative clinical doctorate, the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP). The DNAP is offered in two formats: A 33-credit post-masters program for CRNAs who wish to expand their knowledge in the areas of patient safety, evidence-based practice, education, and leadership. An optional combined degree program (MSNA-DNAP) is available for students matriculating in the master’s program.
