Department of Nurse Anesthesia Programs
Combined Degree MSNA-DNAP Program
Overview
The combined degree is an innovative program integrating the Doctor of Nurse
Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) program with the existing Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (MSNA). The purpose
of the MSNA-DNAP is to allow students the option of taking courses in the doctoral program while enrolled in
the master’s program. Combined degree students may enroll in one doctoral course per semester and will share 9
credits of course work between the MSNA and DNAP for a total of 96 credits (63 credits, MSNA; 33 credits, DNAP).
Students may apply to the combined degree program after successfully completing two
semesters of the MSNA program. Once accepted, combined-degree students begin doctoral course work in the fourth
semester of the master's program. The combined degree option will require at least 8 semesters of full-time study.
Combined degree students must successfully complete the MSNA and pass the national Certification Examination
administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists prior to awarding of the DNAP degree.
The DNAP program has been approved by the State Commission on Higher
Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the
Council on Accreditation
of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA)
