Foreign Student Information
This information is provided only as a guide for prospective foreign students seeking
enrollment into the Virginia Commonwealth Department of Nurse Anesthesia. Students must address each of the following areas
before they successfully enrolling as a foreign student:
| 1. |
Immigration Status |
| In order to enter the United States students must determine how they will
legally enter and stay in the country. There are many different types of visa’s, residency permits and applications for
citizenship available. However, all applications must be processed through the United States Immigration and
Naturalization Office (INS). Contact your closest INS Office to find out which visa permit fits your circumstance. The
Washington, DC branch services the Richmond, Virginia area and can be contacted at: |

| Be advised that currently applications for permanent residency status (Green

| Most US States require RN’s to take the NCLEX examination. Some States may
still offer reciprocity with the Canadian equivalent CNAT exam, however it is in your best interest if you plan to stay
in the US long term to write the NCLEX exam. Additionally, in 1996 the US government legislated that all foreign
health-care workers (other than physicians) are required to complete a certification program in order to enter the United
States. Information on this process can be obtained from: |

School Requirements |
| Along with the academic requirements to be accepted to a program of nurse
anesthesia, the institution (i.e. VCU) has regulations governing the enrollment of foreign students. These regulations
can often be bypassed if you have obtained permanent US residency status or citizenship. Contact the VCU center for
international programs at: |

| General information and Suggestions |
| Please be well advised that your immigration, licensing, financial and personal affairs
need to be in order well before you enroll in classes. The academic and clinical requirements of the program are very
demanding and do not permit for time to take care of these proceedings. For further information on Financial Aide, please
see the VCU Financial Aide Web Site. |
| Prospective students should be aware that Canada currently does not officially have
nurse anesthetists practicing in Canada. Therefore, students who want to enroll in a program and feel they will practice
in the same capacity in Canada need to reevaluate their goals and motivation. |
