Research
Dr. Chuck Biddle, Dr. Michael Fallacaro, and Dr. William Hartland continue to spearhead an
aggressive patient safety research and education program that involves the use of highly realistic reenactments of negative
patient events that occur in the hospital at large and in the critical care areas in particular. Funding has come from a
number of sources to assist this work, most recently involving a collaborative effort with the American Association of Nurse
Anesthetists that will involve the production of a video series that will educate anesthesia providers nationwide about the
Scope and Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Follow-up, objective outcomes research is also planned for this ambitious
project.
| The Research Department's goal is to allow students to: |
| - |
understand the importance of research to the professional socialization of the nurse anesthetist; |
| - |
acknowledge the ways in which we come to know things in the context strengths/weaknesses; |
| - |
appreciate the components/stages of the research process; |
| - |
describe the importance of selecting/understanding the research design given the study objectives; |
| - |
anticipate and evaluate the appropriateness of the statistical procedures employed; |
| - |
evaluate the research article based on reasonable and established criteria; |
| - |
explain the major mistakes which attend each stage of the research process; |
| - |
identify the importance of Institutional Review Board approval in the conduct of inquiry; |
| - |
rationally approach a situation dealing with academic misconduct; |
| - |
become a critical consumer of the literature; |
| - |
suggest alternatives and new initiatives to prevailing paradigms. |
