Admissions


To apply for admission to the Program in Patient Counseling, please contact Ms. Christine Stevens at 804/828-0540 or by email at cstevens3@vcu.edu.

Intern Certificate Program
1. VCU Graduate School Application (3 letters of reference not required)
2. ACPE Application
3. Transcripts from all previous or current institutions of higher education.
4. $50 Application fee, payable to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Graduate Certificate Program
1. VCU Graduate School Application

3. Transcripts from all previous or current institutions of higher education.

5. A copy of all previous CPE evaluations.
6. Two verbatim case studies of your work with patients/clients.

Master of Science Degree
1. VCU Graduate School Application
2. ACPE Application
3. Submission of transcripts with indication of completed undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
4. Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or at least one year of graduate education with a grade-point of "B" or better.
5. $50 Application fee, payable to Virginia Commonwealth University.
6. A copy of all previous CPE evaluations.
7. Two verbatim case studies of your work with patients/clients.
8. A curriculum vitae.
9. A personal interview with a faculty admissions committee.
10. International students for whom English is a second language should submit scores at an acceptable level (minimum of 550) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and give additional evidence of ability to communicate in English with facility.
11. The Accelerated Master of Science degree is available to students who hold a Master's degree and who have completed one unit of ACPE clinical pastoral education.

CPE Residency
Candidates seeking hospital stipends must have completed two years of theological education or a graduate degree in a health-related field with demonstrated background in theological studies and one unit of CPE.

Fees
All applications for admission to a program require an administrative fee. The amount of this fee is to be established yearly and will be communicated in all correspondence with prospective students. The present administrative fee is set at $50.00. This is to accompany all new applications for admission. This fee is non-refundable unless the program is cancelled.

Deadlines
- Completed applications received prior to December 1st will receive a decision by February 1st for the following Summer and Fall residencies.
- Completed applications received by February 1st will receive a decision by March 15th for the following Summer and Fall residencies.
- Completed applications received after February 1st will be processed on a rolling admissions basis.
- Summer Intern applications received by December 1st will receive a decision by January 15th.
- Summer Intern applications received by January 15th will receive a decision by February 28th.
- Fall and Spring Internships as well as out of sequence residency and summer intern applications are processed on a rolling admissions basis.
- Response to all rolling admissions applications will be provided within 60 days of receipt of the completed application.

Interviews
An interview with a CPE supervisor is part of the application process. This process shall conform to the guidelines specified in the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.

Restrictions
No application for any program will be considered more than one year prior to anticipated enrollment.
