Admissions and Tuition

Tuition
Tuition costs may be determined from the VCU Student Accounting Tuition & Fees web site. Under the "Select Program" pull-down menu, choose "Graduate Masters - Patient Counseling" even if you are applying for the Post baccalaureate Certificate in Patient Counseling program. At this time, tuition costs are the same for both programs.

Financial Aid
Students in Patient Counseling may qualify for Federal Financial Aid assistance. For more information, contact the VCU Department of Financial Aid.

Scholarships
A limited amount of scholarship assistance is available through the A.D. Williams Scholarship program. Interested students should submit a letter requesting financial assistance to the Department of Patient Counseling.

Certificate in Patient Counseling (Post Baccalaureate Graduate Certificate)

  1. VCU Graduate School Application
  2. ACPE Application
  3. Transcripts from all previous or current institutions of higher education. Transcripts should be sent directly to the VCU Graduate School Admissions.
  4. $50 Application fee, payable to Virginia Commonwealth University.
  5. A resume.
  6. A personal interview with one or more faculty members.

Master of Science in Patient Counseling

  1. VCU Graduate School Application
  2. ACPE Application
  3. Submission of transcripts with indication of completed undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Transcripts should be sent directly to the VCU Graduate School Admissions.
  4. Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or at least one year of graduate education with a grade-point of "B" or better.
  5. $50 Application fee, payable to Virginia Commonwealth University.
  6. A copy of all previous ACPE CPE evaluations.
  7. Two verbatim case studies of your work with patients/clients.
  8. A resume.
  9. A personal interview with a faculty admissions committee.
  10. International students for whom English is a second language should submit scores at an acceptable level (minimum of 550) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and give additional evidence of ability to communicate in English with facility and Skype interview. Fees
All applications for admission to a program require an administrative fee, which is payable on-line to the University. The amount of this fee is established yearly and will be communicated in all correspondence with prospective students. The present administrative fee is set at $50.00. This is to accompany all new applications for admission. This fee is non-refundable unless the program is cancelled.


Deadlines

  • Completed applications received prior to December 1st will receive a decision by February 28th for the following Summer and Fall residencies.
  • Completed applications received by February 1st will receive a decision by March 15th for the following Summer and Fall residencies.
  • Completed applications received after February 1st will be processed on a rolling admissions basis.
  • Summer Certificate in Patient Counseling applications received by December 1st will receive a decision by January 30th.
  • Summer Certificate in Patient Counseling applications received by January 15th will receive a decision by February 28th.
  • Response to all rolling admissions applications will be provided within 60 days of receipt of the completed application.

Restrictions
No application for any program will be considered more than one year prior to anticipated enrollment.
