The Pastoral Care Department of Mary Washington Hospital,
Medicorp Health System offers Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through an agreement with the
Program of Patient Counseling, Virginia Commonwealth University; Department of Pastoral Care Medical College
of Virginia Hospitals & Physicians, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. Medicorp Health System
offers CPE as a satellite of VCU. This program is offered in accordance with the policies and procedures of
VCU as related to placement at Medicorp and in accordance with the standards
of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
Mary Washington Hospital is the largest entity within the Medicorp Health
System, a group of health care companies that serve Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties, a
population of roughly 250,000. Other entities in the system include Carriage Hill Nursing Home, Chancellor's
Village Retirement Community, Mary Washington Hospice, Snowden at Fredericksburg (a psychiatric treatment
facility) and Mary Washington Home Health. MWH is a 318 bed, private, not-for-profit, hospital. It is governed
by a community-based board of directors, the members of which are elected by a general membership who
themselves are interested residents who pay a nominal ee to participate in the corporation. Medical
specialties at MWH include cardiology and cardio-thoracic surgery, obstetrics, general and orthopedic surgery,
oncology, palliative care and a small pediatric unit. Additionally, MWH has medical, surgical, cardiac, and
neo-natal intensive care units. Although not a trauma center, the emergency department at MWH is consistently
one of the busiest in the state of Virginia.

The Pastoral Care Department at Mary Washington Hospital has existed since
1983 when the first full-time Director of Pastoral Care, the Rev. James Vaught, was hired. Since that time,
there have been two other Directors of Pastoral Care, the Rev. Steven Mills, and the Rev. Kevin Crowder.
Medicorp Health System presently employees a second full-time professional chaplain, the Rev. Dr. Carrington
Bailey, who provides pastoral care and pastoral care administrative oversight at Mary Washington Hospice,
Snowden at Fredericksburg, and Carriage Hill Nursing Home. The MWH Director of the Pastoral Care Department
and the Medicorp Manager for Spiritual Care report to the Director of Community Programs.
