Nuclear Medicine Pioneer, Dr. Alton Sharpe, passes

The Department of Radiation Sciences mourns the loss of Dr. Alton R. Sharpe, Jr. on August 14, 2008. Dr. Sharpe was a pioneer in the nuclear medicine field. Dr. Sharpe was a Professor of Radiology and Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia from 1967 to 1992 and founded the Division of Nuclear Medicine. He also served as the Chairman of Nuclear Medicine for many years.

Dr. Sharpe had a role in the education of nuclear medicine technology students as well. He graciously endowed the "Elizabeth Blackburn Award." The honoree, Mrs. Elizabeth Blackburn, was the Chief Technologist in Nuclear Medicine and a member of the faculty for 18 years. Dr. Sharpe credits Mrs. Blackburn with teaching him the rudiments, fundamentals, and applications of nuclear medicine.

A monetary award will be given to a graduating Nuclear Medicine Technology student in recognition of outstanding academic (a minimum departmental cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5) and clinic performance, as recommended by the faculty.

We offered our condolences to Dr. Sharpe's wife of 54 years, Mrs. Patricia Moncure Sharpe and the entire Sharpe extended family.
